Exhibition Opening – Contemporary figurative artist Lena Hugo and Gerrit Handl immersing and emerging

At the forthcoming exhibition at the ADMIRALS RESIDENCE, a dialogue unfolds, inviting us to explore two perspectives on the contemporary figure. This setting is not merely a display of art but an inspiring conversation between two artists whose works resonate with insights into our shared human experience.

All art enthusiasts and artists interested to experience an afternoon of art at our exhibition are invited. The opening will be on July 9th from 13:00 to 17:00. Meet the current artists, chat with them about their latest work and how they have created them during their residence here in Muizenberg. When asked about her work during The Artist Residency at the ADMIRALS RESIDENCE, contemporary figurative artist Lena Hugo said she “seeks to create art exploring the concept of immersing and emerging within the contemporary figure and environment.” Drawing inspiration from previous themes of The Artist Residency, Hugo hopes to expand the conversation by placing the work of the Residency’s founding artist GERRIT HANDL alongside her own. GERRIT HANDL describes his process as immersing himself in a conversation with the artwork allowing a figure to emerge from linear poetry.

In their work, Hugo and Handl offer figurative comments on paper and board, navigating the delicate balance between abstraction and representation. Their art invites us to consider not just the figures they depict but the spaces they inhabit and the forms they traverse, prompting us to reflect on our collective ability to live together in harmony.
