The ADMIRALS RESIDENCE is an Institution established to study and live the artist mindset. The Program is collaborating at the intersection of art, science and entrepreneurial thinking. The flagship projects of the house are the ADMIRALS GRANT, curated Salon Dinners and the process orientated artwork ‘liveWORK’ which initiated with the idea and acquisition of a suitable property for the residence in 2010. Our work in Muizenberg is aiming to provide infrastructure, stepping stones and important landmarks for artists looking to develop a synergetic artist community network and navigating the challenges of creating impact in a world that seems to be in urgent need to preserve the power of appropriate engagement and meaningful perception of images.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF SURF LESSON
Since 1999, enDosurf… has developed an individual coaching approach based on small groups, individual attention, reading conditions, spot selection, progression and feedback.
The principle is simple: rather than taking everybody to the same beach and giving everybody the same lesson, we look at the conditions, the people in the group and what each surfer actually needs.
The objective is not simply to get you standing on a board.
It is to help you become a more independent surfer — someone who gradually learns to read the ocean, understand the conditions and make better decisions for themselves.

At the forthcoming exhibition at the ADMIRALS RESIDENCE, a dialogue unfolds, inviting us to explore two perspectives on the contemporary figure. This setting is not merely a display of art but an inspiring conversation between two artists whose works resonate with insights into our shared human experience.

All art enthusiasts and artists interested to experience an afternoon of art at our exhibition are invited. The opening will be on July 9th from 13:00 to 17:00. The cultural exchange event of the first Thursday has been successfully launched throughout Cape Town in 2012 and was intended to be centred around art galleries, retail stores, restaurants and bars. We want to combine this approach with added value to the community of visual artists around the cape peninsula. We are opening opportunity for collaborating by finding inspiration together whilst working in exchange with a life model.

Lena Hugo seeks to create art exploring the concept of immersing and emerging within the contemporary figure and environment. Throughout her stay she will be reacting to the Displacement title of our prior residency exhibition title. Her personal work involves the depiction of individuals going through physical or emotional displacement, and how it affects their identity and sense of belonging. With her arrival on the 24th of June until her departure on the 15th of August we invite you to follow her work process in form of private studio visits, several events and her final exhibition.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting yet another artist dinner at our single table restaurant here at the admirals residence. It was planned around the intent of investigating forms of living together and apart. „Conviviality: That just simply means living together, doesn’t it.“ Translating experiences into our own beliefs that might be part of what happens if we meet in person, previously foreign meanings emerge from the abstract into the present. Thank you Isobel for pointing out so clearly that we are to actively living the concept of conviviality.
